On Friday 5th December, St Mary’s University, Twickenham will welcome One World Media for an international journalism workshop about reporting and filmmaking in the developing world. One World Media is the UK partner of a pan-European project called Beyond Your World, which seeks to inspire and enable young journalists and filmmakers to cover international development issues. The workshop, which is free and open to current students, will be delivered by Sophie Clark, who has worked as a producer and director in television and radio since 1989, including working for GMTV and Sky News. Since then Sophie has launched Rooftop Productions, an independent production company specialising in making popular programming about the developing world. Students who participate in the workshop can apply for financial support to help them cover stories in the developing world. Last year, two students from St Mary’s, Gerrardo Lemos and Neil Kingston, won funding for their documentaries in Columbia and Mongolia. Darragh Minogue, Programme Director for the MA in Sports Journalism said, “This is a great opportunity for students to learn with an experienced documentary filmmaker and consider the practical and ethical difficulties of reporting the developing world’ For more information, please contact Daragh Minogue at daragh.minogue@stmarys.ac.uk.
