Second year MA Bioethics and Medical Law student Rebecca Brione at St Mary's University, Twickenham has been awarded a Fran Trust scholarship to support her in presenting a paper at the upcoming British Medical Association (BMA) Forensic Medicine Conference on Medical Ethics and the Criminal Justice System.
To earn the scholarship, Rebecca needed to provide the Fran Trust with information about her academic background and future plans, as well as the paper she is going to present. The Fran Trust funds scholarly activity in the fields of feminism, gender, or women’s studies, providing grants to postgraduate students studying at UK universities to attend and present papers on a gender-related topic at academic conferences in the UK.
Programme Director of MA Bioethics and Medical Law Dr Trevor Stammers said, ”Rebecca’s coursework for the MA has been of a publishable standard throughout her studies and her paper on the ethics of assisted reproductive technology (ART) for women in prison is a strikingly original and thought-provoking argument, the force of which cannot be ignored. It will arouse much debate at this prestigious conference and I am delighted the Fran Trust has recognised the importance of Rebecca’s work by supporting her with this award.”
Rebecca’s paper entitled Elective medical treatment in the criminal justice system: the ethics of providing assisted reproduction to women in prison will be given at the BMA Forensic Medicine Conference on the 26th March 2015.
