Athletes from the Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) at St Mary’s University competed at the European Team Championships as part of Team GB and competed in the U20 and U23 European Junior Championships Trials, on the 20th and 21st June.
The European Team Championships were hosted in Cheboksary, Russia and saw Team GB compete with athletes from 11 European countries. Andy Vernon competed in the Men’s 5000m, despite leading into the last lap he finished in third place, and in the women’s race, Lily Partridge finished 8th. Elsewhere in the 3000m Steeplechase, Lennie Waite finished 2nd and St Mary’s alumnus Zane Duquemin competed in the Discus and Shot put.
In the U20 and U23 European Junior Championships trials, EPACC saw numerous athletes compete for their places at the Championships. In the U23 Men’s 800m race, Charlie Grice won his race and met the qualifying time, Elliot Giles came in 4th, Theo Blundell came in 5th and Richard Charles finished 7th. EPACC also saw success in the men’s U23 3000m Steeplechase as Ryan Driscoll claimed the Gold. Elsewhere, Amy Griffiths came second in the U20 1500m, Gus Cockle came second and Jack Rowe came 10th in the U20 5000m, Grace Baker came second in the U20 3000m, Adelle Tracey came 4th in the U23 800m, and Michael Callegari finished third in U23 5000m.
Director of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said, “Some promising performances across the events from St Mary's EPACC athletes. This should leave some of the athletes well placed for selection at Championships taking place later this summer.”
EPACC Athletes Compete in European Team Championships and European Championship Trials
Athletes from the EPACC at St Mary’s University, Twickenham competed at the recent European Team Championships and the U20 and U23 European Trials.
