St Mary’s Academic to speak at the European Parliament

Programme Director for the MA Bioethics and Medical Law at St Mary’s University, Twickenham Dr Trevor Stammers has been invited to speak at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The European Parliament is hosting to a number of events focusing on the value of human life, dignity and the ethical challenges posed by new technologies.  Leading experts from across Europe have gathered to inform members of the Parliament about the need to protect the inherent value of human life, as encapsulated in the European Charter of Fundamental rights – first and foremost that all have a right to life.

Dr Stammers has been invited by Mr Branislav Skripek MEP and Christian Action Research and Education (CARE) for Europe, a Christian NGO, to bring news of the latest developments in three and four parent IVF techniques recently considered by the UK parliament. “It is alarming that decisions are being made by laymen and women in politics, without proper consultation, information and trials, which can alter the very nature of children and the following generations.  Without open debate, peer-reviewed research and sound scientific footing we are advancing a eugenic agenda without any certainty, safeguards or common sense.”
