St Mary's Sports Journalism Student Shortlisted for NCTJ Award for Excellence

MA Sports Journalism Student at St Mary’s University, Twickenham Michael Steward has been shortlisted by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).

Michael achieved the Gold Standard in his NCTJ Diploma Exams and is on course to receive his MA in Sports Journalism in December. He has been shortlisted in the category of Sports Journalism.

Programme Director for Sport Journalism Daragh Minogue said, "The NCTJ Awards for Excellence are really competitive, so to earn a nomination is a great achievement. The nomination is well deserved. Michael is a talented writer and has a natural instinct for what makes a good story.”

"I remember talking to Michael about George Orwell's essay on his favourite pub, The Moon Under Water, the last feature Orwell wrote for the Evening Standard in 1948. It inspired Michael to write about how the four pubs on each corner of Griffin Park will cope when Brentford FC move to their new stadium. He also wrote some great features for the Richmond Magazine.”

The winners will be announced by journalist and presenter of BBC Midlands Today, Nick Owen at the Journalism Skills Conference gala dinner in Birmingham on Thursday, 26 November.
