Prof Philip Booth to Deliver Inaugural Lecture at St Mary's

Professor of Finance, Public Policy and Ethics at St Mary’s University, Twickenham Philip Booth will deliver his Inaugural Lecture on Tuesday 27th September. The lecture, entitled Regulating Markets in an Economy Without Angels will explore whether financial markets are a force for good. He will discuss the failure of markets to achieve the outcomes we want, perhaps most notably in the financial crash of 2008, has led many to reject markets as the most important vehicle for promoting the common good and spreading prosperity, leading led to calls for markets to be tightly regulated by governments. The lecture will throw light upon questions such as; why are markets important? What can history and political economy tell us about how markets can be effectively regulated? And what does a Catholic understanding of human nature have to contribute to our judgements about who should regulate markets? The lecture will try to answer those questions in relation to particular practical areas such as finance and environmental protection. There will also be a short commentary by Prof Martin Schlag, Co-Founder and Academic Director of the Markets, Culture and Ethics Research Centre at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Rome For further information please contact Kim Wright on 020 8240 8228 or at kim.wright@stmarys.ac.uk.
