Athletes and alumni from the Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham saw success at the European Athletics Championships from 6th to 10th July.
Hosted in Amsterdam, the championships brought together Europe’s elite athletes for the final major competition ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. 12 athletes from St Mary’s attended the competition, representing Team GB in a host of events.
Stand out performances at the competition included current Physical and Sport Education student Elliot Giles, who finished third in the men’s 800m securing a personal best and Olympic qualifying time, alumna Steph Twell, who finished third in women’s 5000m, and EPACC Athelete Jo Pavey, who finished fifth in the women’s 10000m and secured an Olympic qualification time.
Director of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said “Steph and Elliot have produced excellent performances over the last couple of weeks. After winning their respective British titles they've produced committed performances at the European champs to both come away with medals. Steph has already secured her place in Rio and Elliot's performances will hopefully have caught the eye of the selectors.”
