Inaugural Year of Doctoral College Welcomed by St Mary’s

This autumn term marks the inaugural year of the Doctoral College at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, building on an established culture of research and scholarship across the University, the Doctoral College offers scholars undertaking an MPhil, PhD or a Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD), greater support and a dedicated learning space with the University’s Naylor Library.

Professor Philip Booth, Director of Research & Public Engagement at St Mary’s commented, “We currently have a thriving PhD programme with over 80 students, all supported by a supervisory team of active researchers. I’m delighted we are able to strengthen our offering for our friendly, inclusive and intellectually rigorous learning community.

 “The foundations of the Doctoral College are built upon inter-disciplinary education, virtues and values which underpin our institution, and we are looking forward to seeing our research community grow and thrive.”

The Doctoral College, providing study facilities for all research degree students who require them as well as hot-desk space, will be formally opened in December, but is currently already benefitting St Mary’s students.

Claire Tapia, Head of Research Services, added, “We have students studying for PhDs in a whole host of areas, from applied science, sport and health, to theology, arts and humanities, social sciences, business and education.

“Through the creation of the Doctoral College, we will provide our students with the opportunity to work together and collaborate across disciplines. We will also offer a flexible learning space for part-time students and professional doctorate students.”

The Naylor Library - which opened in 2015 - is located just a ten minute walk from the Main Library, with approximately 270 study places to suit different working styles and includes soft seating areas, social spaces as well as traditional silent study and group study areas.

There is also an on-site café serving Starbucks Coffee and other refreshments. Other facilities include a green screen room, iMac suite, and bookable 1-1 and group study rooms. 

Professor Philip Booth is Academic Director of the Doctoral College and Claire Tapia, Head of Research Services, is responsible for its operational management.

As well as Director of Research and Public Engagement within the University, Prof Booth helps to develop curricula and teaches in fields such as political economy, business ethics and Catholic social teaching. He is currently researching public choice economics and tax and benefit systems; state pensions systems and inter-generational problems; Catholic social teaching and ethical behaviour in business; and the development of private regulatory institutions within investment markets.

Claire has worked in a number of institutions during her career and is as an expert in management in higher education. She is involved in the broad range of research activities at St Mary’s including managing the Research Degree Programme, the Research Excellence Framework, research funding, and research ethics and integrity.
