St Mary’s University, London students on the Chelsea Football Club Foundation Coaching and Development degree led and delivered practical sessions to children at Chelsea FC’s Cobham training ground.
The first-year St Mary’s students were invited at part of a recruitment event for Chelsea FC’s Soccer Schools department, with opportunities open for students to gain paid employment with the Soccer Schools team to complement their studies.
The Soccer Schools programme provides coaching, skill development and opportunities for children aged 3-16 to fulfil their potential in football.
On the day, the Chelsea coaches presented to the students about their philosophy and their syllabus. Students were then put into groups and given time to plan their sessions.
In the arena at the training ground, St Mary’s students delivered their practical session to the children as the Chelsea FC training staff observed. After the event, all students were offered a final face-to-face interview alongside feedback on their coaching sessions.
Toms Simms (Project Coordinator on the Chelsea FC Foundation Degree Programme) said, “Opportunities like this really allow our students to step into what real coaching looks and feels like. Not only does it help them grow in confidence and sharpen their practical skills, but it also gives them a genuine pathway into paid roles with the club. It’s exactly the kind of experience that brings their learning to life.”
The Chelsea Football Club Foundation Coaching and Development Degree allows students to develop an in-depth understanding of the football industry, with learning taking place at multiple locations, including St Mary’s University, Stamford Bridge, and the Chelsea FC Training Ground in Cobham.
