PhD Theology (Maryvale@StMary’s)
The Maryvale@StMary’s part-time, distance learning PhD (between 4-7 years) provides the opportunity for in-depth study in an area of theological interest, with students joining the programme from across continents and time zones. It is very popular, not only with Catholics, but with those of other faiths.

Forerunners in online and Catholic education
Maryvale@StMary’s has specialised in distance learning theology degrees (BA, MA and PhD) for over 30 years, making it one of the oldest Catholic distance learning institutes in the English-speaking world. In June 2024, three of the theology degrees transferred to St Mary’s University, becoming Maryvale@StMary’s, the distance learning arm of the School of Theology and the Arts. With our shared Catholic ethos, we become part of the long and distinguished history of St Mary’s University; which includes the Mater Ecclesiae College, established in 1614.

The School of Theology and the Arts
Specialisms include, but are not limited to, systematic theology, Church History; monastic and religious life; moral theology, ethics, culture and inculturation, Catholic Education; practical/pastoral theology, sociology of religion, Christian anthropology, mystical theology; Eastern Christianity; evangelisation, catechesis, inter-faith studies, Catholic spirituality, ecclesiology and marriage and the family.
About the PhD
There are two points of entry for the PhD (Maryvale@StMary’s), October and February. Students apply through St Mary’s University, submitting a proposal for their chosen area of study. The programme starts with an evening introductory session (online) with the Head of the School of Theology (Dr Jeremy Pilch), the PhD Director (Rev Dr Harry Schnitker) and other members of the School of Theology.
Students are appointed to a supervisory team, which includes a Director of Studies, and either one or two other supervisors, all specialists in the student’s chosen area of study. They meet between six and eight times a year with the supervisory team, predominantly on Teams. There is one ten-day residential per year (June) on the campus of St Mary’s University. Students come together at this time for lectures, masterclasses, debates, discussions, to present their own research and to socialise with fellow peers. They will have one of their supervisory meetings during this time. A log of the discussion and outcomes is kept for all supervisory meetings.
There is a focus on combining academic study, prayer life and the development of an online community of students and staff which encourages, supports and enhances student progress and achievements.
Dr Schnitker welcomes enquiries about the part-time, distance learning PhD programme, Maryvale@StMary’s and offers an online conversation with potential students.
