Why study Sports Management?

The sports business is a truly global one, offering excellent opportunities for graduates to work around the world. Research conducted by Sport England shows that over 440,000 people are employed in sport-related jobs in England alone.

Our Master's degree in Sports Management focuses on management skills and approaches, accelerating your progression towards (or in) a career in sports management.

London is the centre of the global sports industry (Sport Business International labelled London as the world’s ‘Ultimate Sports City’ in 2012, 2014 and again in 2018). You'll visit these internationally-renowned venues as part of the degree, gaining a practical understanding of how they are managed. London is home to many of the biggest brands in global sport.

A special feature the Sports Management degree at St Mary’s is the work placement. Relevant work experience is vital if you want a career in the sports industry, as practical experience is required for almost all jobs.

The opportunities for internships, placements and eventually jobs in London are unmatched in Britain. We have close ties with many sporting organisations and work with them to arrange student placements.

You can combine your placement with your consultancy/research project. This will give you in-depth involvement with an organisation. You will gain new skills, expertise and networks to enhance your career opportunities within the sports industry.

Entry requirements

2:2 Previous degree

An undergraduate degree with at least 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent)

International requirements

International students should check our country-specific pages for equivalents. If English is not your first language you will need to achieve an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any section (or equivalent).

We now accept IELTS Indicator test results as proof of your English language level.

How the degree is taught

Teaching methods

You'll be taught on our beautiful and historic campus located in Twickenham, London.

We utilise a wide range of teaching methods. As well as highly interactive lectures, a key focus of the programme will involve you working in groups on practical case studies. These will develop and hone the skills you need to be an effective manager within the sports industry.

Individual tutorials will offer one-to-one support from lecturers.

These approaches are supplemented by an online virtual learning environment where you can find additional learning material.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed in a variety of ways throughout your degree to test knowledge, understanding and skills development.

The programme uses a broad range of assessments including business reports, essays, practical exercises, presentations, case studies and assessed blogs.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees listed are for the duration of the course. Part-time applicants should check our part-time fee information.

Part‐time fees

Part‐time students will be charged for the modules undertaken per academic year. Module prices are calculated as a percentage of credits against the total credits and cost of the degree.

Tuition fees are subject to an inflationary increase each year, meaning if your course runs over more than one academic year you may pay an increased fee per module for each subsequent year of study. Tuition fee increases for returning students will be capped at the higher of 5% per annum or the rate of Consumer Price Index inflation in the United Kingdom.

Funding

Government-funded loans of over £11,000 are available to many Home postgraduate students.

Alumni discount

A 20% tuition fee discount is available for our alumni (undergraduate and PGCE) planning to study this Master's degree. Those studying for a PGDip of PGCert are not eligible for the discount.

Additional costs

Your tuition fees will cover the cost of all mandatory elements of your programme.
