St Mary’s Students and Alumni See Success at UK Athletics Championships

Athletes at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) and the University’s Endurance Performance Centre (EPC) have seen success at UK Athletics Championships in Manchester in June 2024.

Athletes at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) and the University’s Endurance Performance Centre (EPC) have seen success at UK Athletics Championships in Manchester in June 2024.

Current SMU student Jade Spencer-Smith came second in the women’s pole vault, while current SMU and EPC student Sam Charig placed eighth in the men’s 1500m. Sam ran a personal best time of 3:39:88 in the heats, before qualifying for his first UK Championships final.

Notable achievements at the UK Championships in the men’s events included EPC alumnus Jack Rowe placing third in the men’s 5000m, and current EPC and English Athletics (EA) Talent Hub athlete Zak Seddon placing third in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

In the women’s events, EPC alumnae Revee Walcott-Nolan, Izzy Fry, and Stevie Lawrence all placed third in the women’s 1500m, women’s 5000m, and women’s 3000m steeplechase respectively. SMU alumna Jade Lally came third in the women’s discus throw.

Speaking on these results, EPC performance coach Craig Winrow said, “It’s really great to see so many EPC and St Mary’s athletes making finals and winning medals. It was a really successful UK Athletics Championships for past and present EPC athletes alike."

  • Jade Spencer-Smith (pole vault) - 2nd place
  • Izzy Fry (5000m) - 3rd place
  • Jade Lally (discus throw) - 3rd place
  • Stevie Lawrence (steeplechase 3000m) - 3rd place
  • Jack Rowe (5000m) - 3rd place
  • Zak Seddon (steeplechase 3000m) - 3rd place
  • Revee Walcott Nolan (1500m) - 3rd place
  • Thomas Randolph (800m) - 4th place
  • Ellis Cross (5000m) - 6th place
  • Henry McLuckie (1500m) - 6th place
  • Ricky Harvie (steeplechase 3000m) - 7th place
  • Samuel Charig (1500m) - 8th place.

The Endurance Performance Centre (EPC) is an internationally renowned endurance running programme at St Mary’s University, with one of the best training setups in the world. The EPC and its coaches provide an endurance performance environment that supports, challenges, and develops elite runners.

These successes at the UK Championships continue a proud history for St Mary’s in elite athletics events including the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with many former students having competed over the years. SMU alumni who have gone on to win medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games include Sir Mo Farah, Rebecca Romero, Moe Sbihi, Dave Weir, Matt Wells, and Corrine Hall.
