‘Lessons from Rwanda’, a talk by Eric Eugene Murangwa MBE

Eric Eugene Murangwa MBE will be speaking at St Mary's University. 2024 marks 30 years since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This event, hosted by St Mary’s Psychology BSc (Hons) and Sport Psychology (BSc) team, looks to honour the victims and survivors of all genocide through Eric's story, in an effort to remember the past, heal and move forward, as well as inspire.

Murangwa was a goalkeeper for the renowned Rayon Sports Football Club. He and his immediate family survived the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, in part, thanks to his courage and humanity shown by his teammates. Since he arrived in the UK in 1997, Murangwa has been one of the leading members of the UK's Rwandan community and has co-ordinated several community programmes that have delivered tangible results in areas of community cohesion, peacebuilding, community health and active young people in the UK.

In 2015 Eric co-founded the Ishami Foundation, an umbrella that brings together two of Eric’s past organisations: ‘Survivors Tribune’ and ‘Football for Hope, Peace & Unity’. As a result of his services to the community, Murangwa was awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2018.
