Biography
Professor David Sunnucks is Professor of Anatomy at St Mary’s University, with extensive experience in anatomy, medical education, academic leadership and student support.
David began his academic career at St George’s University of London (SGUL), where he developed his expertise in clinically integrated anatomy and medical education and served as Head of Year 1, supporting students through their transition into medical training. Alongside undergraduate education, he was involved in postgraduate surgical and radiological anatomy teaching, connecting detailed anatomical knowledge with clinical and procedural practice.
He subsequently joined Queen Mary University of London’s Malta campus, progressing through several leadership roles including Head of Anatomy, Head of Year 3 MBBS and Deputy Head of Student Support. There, he led anatomy education, body donation, curriculum development and assessment, while teaching across the medical programme and developing postgraduate cadaveric education.
David’s educational philosophy has also been shaped by his own journey. Growing up with a significant hearing impairment and receiving speech and language therapy gave him an early appreciation of the importance of accessible and inclusive education. This continues to underpin his commitment to creating environments in which students feel supported, valued and able to succeed.
A Senior Fellow of Advance HE, David’s approach combines traditional cadaveric anatomy with clinical application, radiology, simulation and emerging technologies. His research interests include anatomy and medical education, historical approaches to understanding and teaching anatomy, educational innovation and the evolving role of technology within anatomical sciences. He is particularly passionate about involving students in scholarship and research, including supporting students to develop their work towards presentation and publication.
