Nyree is a medical educator and joined St Mary’s University as Professor in Physiology and lead for academic tutoring. Following a PhD in immunology and six years in research, Nyree became a lecturer in higher education over 24 years ago. During this time, she gained a PGCE and Senior Fellowship of Advance HE. Nyree has developed a broad expertise, teaching physiology, biochemistry, immunology and pharmacology. She enjoys the variety of academic life, from teaching and curriculum development to assessment, leadership and mentoring colleagues.
For Nyree, education is fundamentally about people. She believes that students learn best when they feel valued and supported, and she is particularly passionate about creating inclusive environments in which everyone has the opportunity to succeed. One of her previous roles in a London medical school, was as Head of Academic Support for the MBBS, where she led a large team supporting around 2,300 students, helping to identify challenges early to ensure that students received the support they needed to progress.
A strong believer in supporting others to develop, Nyree founded the Invisible Women Scholarship Group to encourage and empower colleagues to engage in scholarship alongside their teaching. This work received national recognition through an ASME Education Innovation Award.
What motivates Nyree most is seeing people grow. Whether supporting a student who is finding their way through medical school or encouraging a colleague to pursue an idea, she values kindness, collaboration and the opportunity to make a positive difference. Ultimately, she wants students to leave medical school not only as knowledgeable doctors, but as confident, empathic and safe practitioners.
