Biography
Professor Ernest Caldwell is Executive Dean of Faculty for Arts, Business, Law, Education and Theology (FABLET) and University Lead on Academic Partnerships at St Mary’s, as well as a distinguished scholar with expertise in Chinese and Southeast Asian law and history. He has extensive experience in academic leadership, having previously served as Director of Education at SOAS University of London, Deputy Vice Chancellor Education at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Provost at Regent College. Ernest is committed to fostering academic excellence, student success, and a vibrant intellectual community grounded in the mission of Catholic higher education.
As an active researcher, Professor Caldwell is currently working on two research projects. The first examines the application and development of canon law within diverse Asian cultural and ecclesial contexts. This work brings together comparative law, theology, culture, and history in a global perspective. The second project takes a comparative approach to the role of Catholic identity in the formation higher education institutional missions and how this in turn impacts the development of international partnerships and strategic collaborations.
