Biography

Richard is a Lecturer in Law, specialising in Intellectual Property and International Trade Law. Before coming to Law, Richard was awarded an BSc(Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science in 1999 from London South Bank University, an MRes in Advanced Instrumentation Systems in 2000 from University College London and a PhD in Medical Engineering in 2005 from Queen Mary University of London.

Following a career as a Biomechanist, and fuelled by an interest in the interface between innovation and law, Richard transferred to Law and was awarded an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary, University of London in 2018 and a GDL (with Distinction) from the University of Westminster in 2019. Richard was Called to the Bar of England and Wales in March 2022 by The Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn.

Richard is module lead for Intellectual Property and the Law of International Trade on the LLB Law programme, and International Intellectual Property and International Trade Law on the LLM International Business Law and LLM International and European Business Law programmes.

Outside of academic, Richard is a powerlifter and has been British Bench Press Champion 12 times since 1999. He has represented Great Britain 17 times internationally at European and World Championship competition in the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and frequently placed in the top 10 in international competition.


Research

Research profile

Richard is interested in all areas of IP law, particularly in current issues in Patent Law and Trade Mark Law. As such, he is currently researching issues related to artificial intelligence and patent ownership, trade mark issues, NFTs, additive manufacturing (3d printing), and issues related to IP rights.
