Our scholarships include a wide range of support services that enable athletes to successfully train, compete and study in a performance environment.

With financial support and a comprehensive support service package, including S&C and rehab services, the scholarship programme can be tailored to your needs.

The scholarships range from a value of £750 to £5,000. The scholarships are open to students in all years of study and aim to support athletes in reaching their dual career-athlete potential.


Elite Scholarship

Value: £4,000 - £5,000

This scholarship package includes:

  • £2,000 - £3,000 financial support
  • Free gym membership
  • Strength and conditioning - individualised programme and support
  • Access to rehab and soft tissue services
  • Performance workshops
  • Sport Scholar Kit
Criteria

An athlete who has potential to compete at the Olympic or Paralympic Games during their studies or at the games following their studies.

Assessment against this criteria will be made by looking at the athlete’s position with NGB pathways and funding systems e.g. UKSport World Class Programmes or NGB specific programmes. The university will consider non-Olympic sports at a comparable level.

High Performance Scholarship

Value: £2,500 - £4,000

This scholarship package includes:

  • £500-£1,500 financial support

  • Access to rehab and soft tissue services
  • Professional coaching
  • Performance workshops
  • Sport Scholar Kit

Please note: athletes must be committed to representing St Mary’s in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport).

Eligibility criteria

Athletes should be currently competing at a minimum of junior national level or equivalent and be able to demonstrate how they can significantly contribute to success in university competitions.

Sports scholarships are awarded on an annual basis and to be eligible students must:

  • Meet the specific sport specific requirements outlined in the scholarship being applied for.
  • Currently be a full time student at the university or have been made an offer of a place to study on a full time foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at St Mary’s University.
  • Register on a full time undergraduate/foundation degree course at St Mary’s University in September 2018
  • Financial sport scholarships may not be held in conjunction with any other St Mary’s scholarships. 

*Meeting the above criteria does not mean automatic award of sports scholarship. Competition for sport scholarships is very high and you must be able to show evidence of your sporting achievements and provide supporting information from your National Governing Body. Students who participate in a team sport may have to undergo a player assessment. Priority will be given to BUCS sports/events that St Mary’s compete in.

** Successful applicants will be provided with an athlete agreement outlining the services provided, the expectations of all scholars and required commitments for representing St Mary’s University in sporting competitions.

Talented Athlete Scholarship

Performance and Focus Sports

Performance sports for 2018/19 are Athletics, Women’s Football & Futsal, Men’s Rugby League and Men’s Rugby Union.

Focus sports for 2018/2019 are Men’s Basketball, Men’s Cricket, Men’s Football & Futsal, Netball, Men’s Hockey & Women’s Hockey.

There are three different scholarship packages available for Performance and Focus Sports; Elite, High Performance and Performance.

Please see the Elite and High Performance scholarships to see what these packages include. Sport-specific eligibility criteria for the High Performance scholarship is listed below.

All first team members of performance sports will receive a Performance Scholarship:

Value: £750

This scholarship package includes:

  • Performance Scholar Kit
How to apply

There is no application process for this scholarship and they will be awarded once the Head Coach selects their 1st team or equivalent squad.

Eligibility criteria

There is sport-specific criteria for High Performance Scholarships in Performance and Focus sports

For returning students applications will be assessed on their performances in 2017/18, engagement with the scholarship programme (if in receipt of a scholarship in the previous year) and applicable comparison to the below criteria.

Please note: meeting the criteria does not guarantee a scholarship and this is the minimum criteria. For all sports, athletes must be committed to representing St Mary’s in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) and any other relevant National University Competitions.

Athletics

English Schools Senior medallist, U20s British Championships medallist and/or GB Junior representative.

Men’s Basketball

Experience of county or regional representation on the Basketball England Pathway or equivalent National League experience at U18s or senior level.

Men’s Cricket

Playing in county academy squad, have represented at U17 or above national level and/or country 2nd XI cricket.

Men’s Football & Futsal

Experience of county or regional representation on the England FA Pathway at U16s or above.

Women’s Football & Futsal

Experience of representation on the England FA Talent Pathway at youth level; e.g. Regional Talent Club (RTC)/ Centre of Excellence or have played in Tier 4 or above of the FA Women’s National League.

Netball

Experience of county or regional representation on the England Netball Pathway or equivalent National League experience at U18s or senior level.

Men’s Hockey

Experience of county or regional representation on the England Hockey Pathway or equivalent National League experience at U18s or senior level.

Women’s Hockey

Experience of county or regional representation on the England Hockey Pathway or equivalent National League experience at U18s or senior level.

Men’s Rugby League

Playing in the Super League U19’s academy or above.

Men’s Rugby Union

Experience of playing National League 3 or above level, registered player on an ASSE programme, caps for relevant representative sides
