A step-by-step guide to PGCE applications for international students:
1: Make your application on UCAS
Apply via UCAS and send St Mary’s your academic transcripts and English language certificate (if available).
2: Your interview invite
If your application meets the requirements, you will be invited to a face to face interview, asked to take the professional skills test and to provide evidence of your English language level (if applicable).
3: Arrange a visit to the UK
A date will be arranged for you to come to the UK for an interview and you will also be able to take the professional skills test in literacy and numeracy whilst you are in the UK.
4: Undertake school-based tasks
If you pass the interview and the professional skills test, you will be asked to undertake ‘school-based tasks’. We strongly recommend that accepted candidates complete around 10 days of observations in a school. For international candidates we advise that these take place in a primary school or a mixed state comprehensive, not a language school.
5: Complete police and DBS checks
You will need to provide an appropriate police check from your home country. When you arrive in the UK you will need to apply for a DBS check.
6: Complete your fitness to teach form
You will need to pass ‘Fitness to Teach’. This is just an online medical form, St Mary’s will send this to you to complete and then if anything is stated we will forward to our Occupational Health advisor to review.
7: Accept your offer on UCAS
At this stage your offer will become unconditional and you can accept your offer online via UCAS.
8: Pay your deposit and apply for a visa
If you need a visa to study in the UK you will need a CAS from St Mary’s. We will send this upon receipt of your tuition fee deposit and any other documents required.
