Coaching

The coaching at SIMMSport is provided by students from St Mary’s many of whom are studying sport and teaching subjects. The programme gives the students a chance to develop their coaching skills by leading sport sessions each week.

Some of the students are able to use coaching with SIMMSport to earn credit for their degree. This allows them to gain experience of working with young people, National Governing Bodies and other sports organisations. They can then apply this experience to their degree and then in their career after graduating.

The benefits of having St Mary’s students coach for SIMMSport are reflected in the positive comments from participants, parents and other clubs. We often receive comments about the enthusiasm of our coaches and the positive way they motivate the young people they coach.

SIMMSport coaches are led by the Sports Development team at Sport St Mary’s to deliver excellent coaching and sporting opportunities for the local community. Coaches are offered training and access to National Governing Body courses. This improves the coaches’ competency and raises the quality of the sport for those young people in the sessions.

Research shows that students who choose to get involved with programmes like SIMMSport during their degree increase their chances of employment after graduating.

Each coach has experience in their sport as well as the relevant coaching qualifications and will have undergone the required Disclosure and Barring Service check.
