The University understands that sometimes personal circumstances mean that leave cannot be planned.

In this event, you may opt to explore the options below and discuss with your line manager.

Staff on a permanent or fixed term contracts are eligible for Emergency Leave.

A dependent is defined as your spouse, partner, parent, child, or any other person who lives in the same household as the staff member.

A maximum of five days paid emergency dependant leave in a 12 month period (any additional dependant’s leave during the 12 months period will be unpaid)

Your line manager should be informed on the first day of absence, or as soon as reasonably practicable, with the reason for your absence and how long you expect to be away from work.

You may consider using annual leave if you need time off work in an emergency.

Please make sure your line manager is informed at the earliest convenience.

This policy applies to all staff irrespective of service.

Employees will be granted up to five days paid compassionate leave for loss of Immediate family member.

In the devastating event that you suffer a loss of a child under 18 years, employees will be granted two weeks of paid compassionate leave.

“Immediate family” will usually mean spouse, civil partner or partner, parent, parent-in-law, brother, sister, grandparent, and grandchild (this list is not exhaustive).
