Student life

Commonly asked student life questions

Is there on-campus accommodation?

Undergraduate students can apply to live in one of St Mary's halls of residence, all of which provide high quality accommodation, Wi-Fi and easy access to facilities on campus.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students may also opt for private accommodation in the local area.

Whichever option you choose, our Accommodation Service can provide you with advice and assistance in finding the right place to live. Please see our international student accommodation page for further information.

Can I work while I study?

Your work allowance will be stated on your visa sticker or biometric residence permit. Tier 4 visa holders are usually entitled to work part-time (20 hours a week) during term time and full-time during the vacations.

Students on a postgraduate course should be aware that undertaking paid work during the summer vacation period could impact on your studies, as this time should be used to write up your dissertation; you would not be able to claim Extenuating Circumstances if you fell behind with your studies as a result of taking on paid work.

If you are studying at St Mary's on a Short Term Study Visa you are not allowed to work. This includes work placements, service learning or unpaid voluntary work.

Please email if you have any questions.

What is there to do in your free time at St Mary's?

The Students' Union (SU) organise weekly social events as well as parties and festivals throughout the year - highlights include a Summer Ball and a London Boat Party. They also organise a wide range of sports clubs and societies for students to get involved in, ranging from basketball and rugby to the International Society and the Christian Union.

There is a Starbucks, a licensed SU bar (with screens showing sporting events) and an SU shop on campus, and there are a wide range of local bars, restaurants and cafés within walking distance.

International students can purchase the St Mary's Social Programme, a competitively-priced travel package including activities in London and across the UK.
