Personal safety online

Don't depend on luck.
Your personal information has a value just like money. Be thoughtful about who you share it with and how it will be used.

Your privacy

  • Keep cards and PIN numbers secure if you are using online or mobile banking. You may want to think about whether you need to save your card details on your computer or online - it is best not to.
  • Review your social media accounts - try not to post anything that can be used to identify you, and make sure your accounts are set to private.
  • Cut back on sharing data - don't fill out forms online unless you need to, and make sure you know what data companies are collecting about you.

Protect your devices

  • Make sure you use anti-virus software and it’s up-to-date.
  • Keep your computer software up-to-date.
  • Always back-up your most important data.
  • When using your browser make sure the address bar starts with ‘https’ and a padlock is shown when submitting sensitive information.
  • Avoid using free Wi-Fi - unless you have protected your devices with a Virtual Private Network (VPN), these free Wi-Fi spots may be collecting data about you and your devices.
