International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) course handbook

The International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) course is one of our routes into teaching, designed for those in schools outside of England. 

The International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) course is an international teacher training route, which meets the same high standards as English qualified teacher status (QTS) courses and leads to the automatic award of QTS. Achieving QTS enables educators to teach in England and around the world upon completion of their training. Our programme offers trainees with the opportunity to make impactful change as an international teacher. Trainees will develop secure pedagogic understanding while exploring their educational context. 

Our iQTS programme is designed for trainees working in either of these age phases:

  • Primary (five to 11 years old)
  • Secondary (11 to 16 years old).

Course structure

Our iQTS course structure includes a combination of taught content, 120 days of school-based training and 20 days of intensive training and practice (ITAP). This programme will also involve phases of school-based training to develop knowledge skills and behaviours to meet the Teachers’ Standards for iQTS. Trainees must complete at least 20 days at an alternative placement. 

The course content is carefully designed to meet the requirements of the Initial Teacher Training Early Career Framework (ITTECF) and is underpinned by research-informed practice. 

Modules will run throughout the year and will be delivered in two blocks of 10 sessions.There is a requirement to attend synchronous sessions alongside engagement with asynchronous content. A detailed overview of the year, including key dates and curriculum content, will be emailed to schools when an offer to study is made.
