The London 2017 World Athletics Championships brought together the world’s leading track and field talent for the first global competition since the Rio 2016 Olympics.

St Mary’s was proud to be involved in the championships, building on the London 2012 Legacy. 11 athletes competing at the championships were St Mary’s alumni or part of our Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC).

Our competing athletes

Team St Mary’s athletes competed in a range of endurance distances, alongside alumna Jade Lally in the discus and alumnus Toby Gold who won Silver in the Men’s T33 100m at the World Para Athletics Championships.

Sir Mo Farah, a St Mary's alumnus, won a gold medal in the 10,000m and a silver medal in the 5000m.

Training camps

The University is also delighted to play a role as a team base with athletes from China and Japan training on the Sir Mo Farah athletics track. St Mary’s will in total host athletes from 14 nations across various training groups in the build up to and during the Championships.
