St Mary’s University, Twickenham, will be celebrating its athletic legacy as part its 175th Anniversary commemorations with a British Milers Club (BMC) Record Breaker event on Wednesday 18 June.
The event is taking place on the Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track. At 5:45pm children from local Primary schools will kick the evening off, and from 7pm, there will be a series of senior races organised in partnership with the BMC, the premier club for middle-distance running in the UK.
Good fields of athletes from around the country will compete in 800m to 3000m events, with many aiming to achieve personal best times. There will be cash prizes in the men’s and women’s 800m and 1500m A races, provided by the generous sponsorship of More Space, Athletes Mannies and Nannies, and Purdue Performance.
The event will also include talent from St Mary’s own Endurance Performance Centre (EPC) which is an England Athletics Talent Hub. The Centre has supported the development of more than 50 senior GB internationals, many of which have competed and won medals at Olympic Games and World Championships. The current crop of talented athletes includes Thomas Randolph, bronze medallist at the 2021 European Athletics U23 Championship, and Joe Wigfield, British University’s and College Sports (BUCS) 2020 Cross Country Champion.
Spectators are invited to attend this free, community friendly event from 7pm, where refreshments from the 1850 bar and a BBQ will be available.
St Mary’s University and the EPC has a strong legacy in endurance running and has supported careers of world class runners including Sir Mo Farah, Beth Potter, Jo Pavey, Adelle Tracey, Charlotte Purdue and Steph Twell. EPC alumni and Olympic athletes will be attending to support the event, including Ross Murray and Andy Vernon.
Andrew Reid-Smith, Head of Sport at St Mary’s said, “As we celebrate 175 years of academic and athletic excellence, this special event reflects our commitment to supporting developing and talented athletes, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the community to see a special night of athletics. We would like to thank our brilliant sponsors More Space, Athlete Mannies and Nannies, and Purdue Performance for supporting the event and providing the cash prizes.”
