St Mary’s University, London, is proud to celebrate another outstanding achievement by one of its alumnae, Abi Burton, a BA Sport & Exercise Science graduate, who has been appointed Chair of the first-ever Women’s Rugby Board, established by the Rugby Players Association.

An England Women’s international and back-row forward for Trailfinders Women, Abi will lead the board for the 2025/26 season, representing elite players across the women’s game. The board has been created to deliver player-led representation and wellbeing support, reflecting the unique challenges and opportunities within women’s professional rugby.

Abi’s appointment follows a remarkable period in her career. In 2022, she showed inspirational strength and resilience in returning to elite sport after serious illness and an induced coma. Three years later, she played a key role in England’s Six Nations campaign and the 2025 Rugby World Cup, continuing to establish herself as a leader within the game.

In recognition of her contribution to English rugby, Abi – along with fellow Red Roses alumnae – was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Sport from St Mary’s University in November 2025.

Andrew Reid-Smith, Head of Sport at St Mary’s, said: “Abi’s appointment as Chair of the Women’s Rugby Board is a significant and well-deserved achievement. She is a great example of the leadership, resilience and professionalism we aim to develop at St Mary’s, and we are proud to see her representing players across the women’s game.”

Abi is part of a growing list of St Mary’s alumni making significant contributions to sport at the highest level. Her appointment reflects the University’s long-standing commitment to supporting athletes who excel not only on the field, but also as leaders shaping the future of their sport. The University wishes Abi every success in her new role.
