Biography
Shabana Marshall (FHEA) is a senior lecturer at the School of Education, teaching on both the MA Education and PGCE (secondary) programmes. She has written the MA module 'Race and Equality in Education', to provide educators an opportunity to develop their understanding on issues of race and social justice. She is a member of the St Mary's University (SMU) Race Equality Charter Implementation Team (formerly Self-Assessment Team), and both initiated and continues to support the marking of South Asian Heritage Month at SMU.
Shabana has worked in education for 30-years’, initially as a secondary school history teacher and subject lead in both London and the northeast of England, and then as education officer for the Holocaust Educational Trust, where she helped design and deliver their outreach programmes. She continues to work as a freelance educator for the Trust and is also a Trustee for Project North Star. Additionally, since 2024 she has worked as advisor and critical friend to Middlesborough museum services.
Shabana is currently engaged in doctoral research at Durham University and is also member of both the British Educational Research Association and the Historical Association. Her research interests relate to issues of race and equity in education, exploring the opportunities and barriers that exist to school’s decolonising their curriculums. She is also interested in capturing and centring the herstories and histories of the South Asian diaspora in the northeast of England.
