St Mary’s University School of Education is delighted to offer a CPD course for primary practitioners looking to enhance their delivery of primary science with a particular focus on working scientfically.
With a particular consideration of the practical enquiry skills in the primary science curriculum, this course will develop understanding of working scientifically through the lens of plants. This course is designed for primary science teachers hoping to deepen their knowledge and build confidence in the effective teaching of scientific enquiry and application of disciplinary knowledge.
The course will be delivered by Dr Alex Sinclair, Associate Professor in Primary Education and the Subject Knowledge Lead for Primary Science, and Emily Montenero, Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at St Mary's University.

The course will be delivered in one session between 1.30-4.00pm at St Mary's University on:

Content
Whilst enrolled upon the course you will improve your understanding of working scientifically; skills, enquiry types, and disciplinary knowledge in primary science. Led by research active colleagues, the course has been designed for teachers and leaders with the aim of providing a sound understanding of this curriculum area, while equipping you with the confidence and skills to enhance your professional practice in the classroom.
The course explores:
- how the skills of working scientifically can be developed in the classroom
- the enquiry types in primary science and how pupils can be effectively supported in conducting investigations with growing independence
- the application of disciplinary knowledge that underpins practical science.
Requirements
To enrol on this short course, you must be a teacher or leader in a primary school.
Award
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance from St Mary’s University.
