Appendix 8: Profile Children

Who are your Profile Children?

As a directed task, over the duration of your placement you will usually be required to focus on three Profile Children (the number of profile children you should work with will depend on which placement you are on). This is an opportunity for you to record progress and achievement for a small number of children in your class. It will help to improve your understanding of how children learn and the importance of matching tasks to pupils’ needs, capabilities and interests, in addition to developing the skills required to monitor and track pupil progress over a period of time.

Your Profile Children observations and reflections should also contribute to the class teacher’s record keeping and your evidence may provide valuable support for the class teacher when reporting to parents.

How do I choose my Profile Children?

With the support of your CBM you will choose your Profile Children during your prep week/serial days. One child should ideally have a barrier to learning. Plan for observations at regular intervals and analyse information to build up a changing, emerging picture of the learner

There is no requirement to inform the child’s parents, as this exercise is designed to help improve your understanding of how children learn and the importance of matching tasks to pupils’ needs, capabilities and interests.

Where do I record my information?

All Profile Children information must be stored on Abyasa. Please note all information regarding children is confidential and must only be shared with those professionals within the school. Please ensure all comments are written in a professional manner detailing interpretation and future action. Due to confidentiality, you will use Profile Child A, B and C instead of real names.

Trainees must take great care with all Profile Children records and should refrain from taking hard copies of any evidence away from the school.

How do I know what to include?

Tasks include:

  • Completing and uploading ‘Profile Child Background Information’ found on Moodle. This gives an overview of your Profile Child’s attainment against age related expectations, targets, strength and development areas as a learner.
  • Observations and reflections of progress made in Core subjects
  • Observations and reflections of progress made in Foundation subjects
  • Observations and reflections of progress made in EYFS (if applicable)
  • Summary of strengths, development areas, target setting, additional support

All observations can be from your own lessons or those taught by CBM. These must be recorded here on three separate occasions at the beginning, middle and end of your placement. They are designed to review and build a changing, emerging picture of your profile child.

In addition to the above, finalist students are asked to:

  • Write and upload an annual report for one Profile Child
  • Complete a mock parents’ consultation for one Profile Child and upload notes for meeting.

How do I know what to upload as evidence?

It is your responsibility to select samples of children’s work as evidence which needs to be analysed so that appropriate decisions can be made regarding the next stage of development. It is advised to include constructive comments on strengths and weaknesses and priorities for their development.

Please note: you need to be prepared to provide formal and professional feedback regarding your Profile Children to your CBM/LT.
