Scholarships for international students

Undergraduate international scholarships

International applicants will be automatically considered for the St Mary’s International Country Scholarship and the St Mary’s International Excellence Scholarship. Students can only hold one St Mary’s scholarship at a time and they will be awarded the highest scholarship for which they qualify. Undergraduate scholarships beginning in September 2023 are valid for all years of undergraduate study (excluding placement years with a reduced tuition fee). In order to continue receiving their scholarships, students must remain in good academic standing with the University, meet all requirements to progress to their next year of study and meet all UKVI attendance and engagement requirements. Note that the scholarships below can only be awarded pre-enrollment.

St Mary’s International Country Scholarship

This scholarship gives students a £1,000 tuition fee discount per year of undergraduate enrolment (excluding placement years with a reduced tuition fee). It is automatically applied to offer-holders ordinarily resident in countries the OECD designates as receiving official development assistance. In 2023, this includes Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Please see the full list of eligible countries at the end of this page. Students who meet the requirements will be awarded the St Mary’s International Excellence Scholarship instead of the St Mary’s International Country Scholarship.

St Mary’s International Excellence Scholarship

The St Mary’s International Excellence Scholarship gives selected students a £3,000 tuition fee discount per year of undergraduate enrolment (excluding placement years with a reduced tuition fee).

All eligible applications will automatically be considered after being made an offer of study. A panel will assess offer holders based on candidates’ country of domicile, prior academic achievement and overall application for their programme of study. Applicants do not need to make a separate scholarship application and will receive a scholarship offer letter if they are successful.

Eligibility criteria

Undergraduate international scholarships are open to first year undergraduate students who:

  • have been assessed as overseas fee payers, including British passport holders
  • have applied to study full-time on campus for 2023/24 entry.

Programmes at foundation and undergraduate level, including the Chelsea Football Club Foundation Coaching and Development FdSc, are eligible for the international undergraduate scholarships. Awards are made at the discretion of St Mary’s University.

Only offer holders who are successful in securing a scholarship will be notified within six weeks of receiving their offer of study.

Please note that scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis. Candidates who apply for their programme of study early may therefore have a greater opportunity of success.

By accepting the International Scholarship, you agree to represent St Mary’s University through your degree programme. This may include activities such as providing testimonials or content for social media and other marketing activities, and participating at University open days or international promotional events (in-person or virtually), subject to teaching timetabling and availability.

Postgraduate international scholarships

International applicants will be automatically considered for the St Mary’s International Country Scholarship and the St Mary’s International Excellence Scholarship. Students can only hold one St Mary’s scholarship at a time and they will be awarded the highest scholarship for which they qualify. Postgraduate scholarships are valid for one year of study. Note that the scholarships below can only be awarded pre-enrollment.

All eligible applications will automatically be considered after being made an offer of study. A panel will assess offer holders based on candidates’ country of domicile, prior academic achievement and overall application for their programme of study. Applicants do not need to make a separate scholarship application and will receive a scholarship offer letter if they are successful.

Additional funding sources

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online is a huge database of charities and organisations that award funding for postgraduate study in the UK, including master’s and research degrees.

Many sources of funding are open to international students, although some may only be available to students from certain countries or for certain subjects. The Guide also includes advice and tools to help you to make a successful application.

All students can pay for access to the Guide. If you hold an offer to study at St Mary’s, you can access the Guide for free. Please email studentfundingservice@stmarys.ac.uk with your Student ID number and the name of the course that you’ve applied for to ask for access. Once you have access, you login on the The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding gateway.

EU student loans through FINS

EU students may be eligible for a student loan of up to 25.000 EUR for undergraduate or postgraduate studies at St Mary’s from FINS.

The FINS loan scheme is available to all students from an EU member state who want to study in the UK or Europe. Loans may be used for tuition fees, accommodation, travel, and other costs related to studying in the UK.

Eligibility

  • You must be a citizen of an EU member state.
  • You must have a good academic record.
  • You must have a clean financial record (for example, not blacklisted with any outstanding/unpaid debts for previous loans by any other financial institutions).
  • Further criteria may also apply as detailed on the FINS website.

There is no deadline to apply, but applications can take time to process so we recommend that you apply early. Contact FINS for more information.

EU Students with Settled/Pre-settled status

If you have successfully applied for Settled or Pre-settled status, then you are entitled to study in the UK without a Student visa and pay the Home fees for university courses. This means that you are not eligible for an International Scholarship from St Mary’s, but you may be eligible for a Scholarship or Bursary open to our Home students and Student Finance for undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral studies.

The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) provide detailed information on Brexit, the EU Settlement Scheme, and what this means for students.

For more information about Student Finance for Home students, please contact studentfundingservice@stmarys.ac.uk

US Federal Aid

St Mary's participates in the US government's William D Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. Students who qualify for these loans can see more information on our US Federal Aid pages. Global Education Management Services is another source of loans for students affiliated with the US.
