Expressive Arts: using a story to develop skills in primary music, drama, and art

St Mary’s University School of Education is delighted to offer a brand new CPD course for primary practitioners looking to enhance their delivery of the expressive arts curriculum.

This workshop explores the value of the expressive arts as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Hands on workshops led by subject specialists will explore how children’s literature can create a starting point for the development of discrete skills in music, art, and drama.

There will also be opportunities to discuss how these subjects support children’s wellbeing, engagement in learning, and increased attainment across the curriculum.

The upcoming Government Curriculum Review promises to deliver "a broader curriculum so that children ...do not miss out on subjects such as music, art...and drama" (DfE, 2024). These workshops will support development and delivery of an arts rich curriculum. This course is delivered by Carolyn Hopkins, Susannah Robert, and Kathy Bor, experts in primary drama, music, and art.

The School of Education offers longstanding excellence in professional learning, which is affirmed by our reputation for education degrees, active research centres, and 'outstanding' delivery of initial teacher education.
