Strong subject knowledge lies at the heart of outstanding teaching and St Mary’s School of Education offers support for teachers to develop subject knowledge throughout their careers.
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses
Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses are aimed at pre-PGCE secondary trainee teachers as part of a government-funded initiative to maximise recruitment, but are also suitable for other teachers who are keen to upskill subject knowledge in a particular area.
St Mary’s University offers a number of short courses that are relevant for teachers who are developing their subject knowledge in areas such as sports coaching, French, and Spanish.
Teachers may also be interested in our first aid short courses.
Teacher Subject Specialist Training (TSST)
We offer Teacher Subject Specialist Training (TSST) courses in secondary mathematics, physics, French, and Spanish.
This is offered through Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School and the aim of the programme is to improve the subject knowledge of non-specialist and returning teachers in shortage subject areas. St Mary’s School of Education provides quality assurance for the programme and offer 30 master's credits as an option for TSST course participants.
