Principle 1

Course design is learner-centred and active.

Learner-centred online design enabes students to use their knowledge and skills to make sense of new information. Online learning should support students as active participants where they can learn at their own pace, use their own learning techniques and apply problem-solving, critical thinking and reflective thinking as key skills.

Principle 2 

Course design is inclusive and accessible. 

Learning is adaptable to the needs of students. Students come from a diverse background and have different learning needs. Package your content in different formats for students to consume e.g. videos, quizzes, podcasts, H5P etc. 

Principle 3

Course design emphasises learning as a journey.

Learning is a journey. An effective learning pathway provides students a cohesive learning journey while breaking the whole learning process into manageable chunks i.e. building on knowledge incrementally. Break course content down into bite-size chunks, allowing students to absorb and progress smoothly through the programme, avoiding the sense of being overwhelmed.

Principle 4

Course design is collaborative, social and empowers student learning.

Learning is a symbiotic relatonship. Let students collaborate with each other by giving them opportunities to seek and share information, construct meaningful insights, and produce a diverse set of ideas. Encourage dialogue and social interaction so students can take ownership of their learning. Loop feedback into your ongoing course design. 

Principle 5 

Course design for lifelong independent learning and future skills.

Learning is for life. Help students develop lifelong independent learning skills and grow their future skills to meet the needs of the employability market.
