On Wednesday 4th June, St Mary’s University welcomed the Year 6 children from Our Lady Immaculate primary school for a day of activity and research presentations.

Student Ambassadors at St Mary's ran exciting activities in the morning designed to get the children thinking about their futures and what it might be like to study at university one day.

After campus tours and lunch in the University's Refectory, twenty three of the children presented the research project that they have been working on with Senior Lecturer from the School of Education, Karen Fox.

The presentation comes at the end of a two year project as part of Karen’s Education Doctorate work into whether children can see themselves in the books that they read. The children shared thoughtful and passionate ideas around the themes of identity, diversity, and representation in literature and provided the audience with lots to think about.

Each of the twenty three children were awarded a Junior Researcher certificate by Stephen Parker, Subject Lead for Research in the School of Education, in recognition of the outstanding work they have done on this piece of research.

Their voices will next be heard at the British Educational Research Association (BERA) in September, demonstrating what an impressive impact these children are having beyond their classroom.
