Biography

Dr Robbie McIntyre joined St Mary’s University in 2022 as a lecturer in physiology, and leads the MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology programme. He teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, blending advanced theory with practical, hands-on experience. His teaching emphasises applied exercise physiology, laboratory-based learning, and athlete testing in real-world performance contexts.

Robbie completed his BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Stirling, followed by an MSc in Exercise Physiology at Loughborough University. He earned his PhD at Bangor University, where his research focused on preparatory strategies for exercise in hot environments. His research focuses on extreme-environment physiology and how the body responds to exercise stress, with an emphasis on improving performance and safety in demanding conditions.

Alongside his teaching, Robbie supervises BSc and MSc research projects with a compassionate, student-centred approach. He is passionate about supporting individual growth, helping students develop scientific understanding, practical skills, and confidence in evidence-based practice. His goal is to empower learners to thrive both academically and professionally.

Outside of work, Robbie enjoys weightlifting, rock climbing, hiking, travelling, and going to the theatre.
