St Mary’s Announces Director of Undergraduate Medicine

Prof Heather Angus-Leppan has been appointed as the Director of Undergraduate Medicine at the new School of Medicine, St Mary’s University, London.

Previously, Prof Angus-Leppan held the position of Professor of Medical Education at University of East London (UEL), leading curriculum development on the undergraduate medicine programme. At UEL, she ran an active clinical, teaching, and research programme, with special interests in epilepsy, migraine, intellectual disability, and patient empowerment.  

Speaking of her appointment, Founding Executive Dean of Medicine at St Mary’s Prof Sonia Kumar said, “Heather joins us at a very exciting time in the launch of the new School of Medicine at St Mary’s. She brings a wealth of clinical, research and educational experience which will add incredible value to our growing team, we are very much looking forward to her joining us.”

Prof Heather Angus-Leppan said, “I am delighted to take up the position of Director of Undergraduate Medicine at St Mary’s University. I will be joining a wonderful team, who really put into practice the values of the University. We are developing an exciting undergraduate medicine programme with compassion and respect as central values.

The School of Medicine at St Mary’s will train students to be human-centred, clinically advanced, and digitally innovative doctors, committed to making a sustainable difference to our world. They will be taught at our purpose-built London School of Medicine, where digital health and cutting-edge technology form part of everyday learning. Students will graduate not only with clinical skills, but also with empathy, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to care.”

Over her career Prof Angus-Leppan has held various national and international positions, particularly in the fields of neurology and epilepsy research. She belongs and contributes to various clinical research networks such as National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NIHR), the Association for British Neurologists, and the Medical Society of London – for which she is Honorary Secretary. She has also been an Honorary Associate Professor for the Department of Clinical and Movement Neurosciences, at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology since 2020. 

At the Royal Free London (RFL) NHS Foundation Trust, Prof Angus-Leppan was Research Director of Theme 2 Research and Development from 2021 to 2024.
