Renaissance London

The Renaissance began with the Tudors in the 1500s and ended at the beginning of the Civil War in 1640. By way of examining this significant period in English history, participants will undertake an interdisciplinary study of London’s society and culture, engaging with a variety of literary and historical sources to consider the culture and society of the period from a wide range of perspectives. During the course of the Summer School, participants will visit Hampton Court Palace to witness the physical and spatial legacy of the Tudor times and enjoy active learning outside of the classroom.

This is a 6-week course which is taught on Thursday 9th June from 10am to 5pm and then Tuesday mornings from 10am-1pm and Thursday afternoons 2-5pm.

Price

The full cost is £983, excluding the course assessment.

Participants can opt to take the course assessment at an additional cost of £250. The deposit cost is £50, payable upon application. Please note this course fee rate is for home, UK resident participants only. 

The class trip to Hampton Course Palace on Wednesday 22nd June and entry fee for the Palace is included within the course fee.  Please note that travel costs are the participant’s responsibility.  Please ensure you can commit to the scheduled dates as unfortunately we are unable to give refunds.

Content

This course introduces participants to the study of the Early Modern period, taking London as a focal point for participants to describe, analyse and contest the society, politics and culture of the ‘English Renaissance’.  Participants will strengthen their views of interdisciplinary research in the humanities by considering the history and culture of the period from a range of historical and literary perspectives.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe and contest the main historiographical approaches to the English Renaissance
  • Critically examine the symbiotic relationship between society and culture during the period 1500-1640.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different disciplinary approaches to the Renaissance as they emerge from the study of literature and history
  • Effectively communicate complex ideas in academic and popular formats

Optional course assessment

Participants who wish to take the assessment for this course will produce an exhibition piece relevant to the history of Renaissance London. This could take the form of a walking tour, a video, a set of museum exhibition boards, promotional material for an attraction or event, or a short piece of fiction. Participants will complete a portfolio to explain:

  1. How their output is informed by research in the arts and humanities.
  2. Which public they are seeking to appeal to in relation to their work, and why they have made decisions to shape their output in this way. 

Requirements

It is recommended that Learners should have achieved a level of education equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A*-C prior and two A-Levels, however exemptions may be made for adult returners.

Due to the amount of information covered in the course, home studies of approximately 13 hours per week will be required. 

Award

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.  Those who opt to take the assessment and pass will also receive a transcript detailing 20 credits at level 5.  Please note that the transcript will follow once internal and external quality assurance processes have been completed.
