Athlete Management and Exercise for Health

This course aims to prepare participants to be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of special populations, common medical conditions and deep knowledge of athlete management principles.  Participants will learn the underpinning theories relating to athlete management in terms of needs analysis and factors affecting performance and recovery as well as topics such as travelling with a team, doping and psychology. The practical skills include exercise prescription for a variety of common health conditions and special populations.

Dates and times

The course will run:

25th September - 18th December 2023.

This course runs one day a week for one semester either on a Monday or a Thursday.  This course is in a blended format with a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops. Face-to-face and live online hours vary slightly each week but remain within the hours of 9am and 6pm.

Students will get the assessment dates at the start of the module so have plenty of time to prepare

Price

The full cost is £917 excluding the course assessment. 

Participants can opt to take the course assessment at an additional cost of £250. The deposit cost is £50 which is payable upon application. The course fee excludes refreshments and accommodation. Information on accommodation on campus or in local hotels can be provided upon request.

Content

Whilst enrolled on the course you will cover:

  • psychology of performance and rehabilitation 
  • overtraining, overreaching and periodisation 
  • post exercise recovery strategies 
  • monitoring athletes, environmental factors and nutrition 
  • benchmarking, needs analysis and support service integration  
  • special populations - the female athlete, young, older, and disabled athlete 
  • exercise for health in common medical conditions.

Requirements

Students will normally be expected to have achieved a 2:1 or a good 2:2 (or equivalent) in a related discipline, including:

  • Sport and Exercise Science
  • Sports Coaching
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Sport Science
  • Sports Therapy
  • Physical Education
  • Physiotherapy.

Assessment

Participants who complete and pass the course assessments will receive a certificate of accreditation at master’s level.

For participants who choose not to undertake the assignments, a certificate of attendance will be provided

Here are two assessments for this module, both are worth 50% of the overall mark for the module. 

  • Assessment One - presentation (15 minute presentation on the management of an athlete).
  • Assessment Two - coursework (two 1500 word case studies - clinical reasoning of a special population and one common medical condition).

Both assessments must be passed and cannot be compensated.

Award

Upon successful assessment, learners will be awarded 20 master's level (Level 7) academic credits. Credits may be transferred onto existing master's degrees at St Mary’s University. Students who successfully complete and pass 60 credits will be awarded a relevant post graduate certificate (subject to validation), however students studying in this format are not eligible for BASRaT registration.  To be eligible to register with BASRaT and formally practice in Sport Rehab, students should enrol onto the two year MSc degree program and attain all 180 credits.
