Dr Colleen McKenna, lecturer in academic practice

I joined St Mary’s as a lecturer in academic practice in 2021. I am responsible for the Postgraduate Researchers’ Introduction to Teaching course and I contribute to the PGCAP. I run workshops on assessment and feedback and I am the contact for colleagues interested in pursuing HEA associate fellowship. I also lead on the peer review scheme.

I’ve worked in the area of academic practice and higher education studies for over 20 years.  Before joining St Mary’s, I worked at LSE, where I directed the PGCertHE and led modules in curriculum design, assessment and feedback, HE research and issues in academic practice.  Prior to that, I was a lecturer in academic literacies at UCL where I taught at all levels through to PhD and contributed to the PGCert in Learning and Teaching in HE. Earlier in my career, I taught English literature at Royal Holloway, Manchester Metropolitan and Kingston University.  I’ve worked as an external examiner at the University of Edinburgh, King’s College London, the University of Nottingham and TU Dublin.

I’ve published in the areas of assessment and feedback, academic literacies and student writing, evaluation in HE settings, computer-based assessment and the poetry of Seamus Heaney.
