We have put together some frequently asked questions about how you will access the Fitness and conditioning Suite and Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track.
What are your opening times?
In order to implement the necessary new operating procedures and cleaning regimes, in this initial phase the facility will reopen for slightly reduced hours on weekdays from 07:00 – 21:30 and from 08:30 – 17:00 at weekends.
Will I need to pre-book?
Yes, in order to maintain capacities and to allow us to implement and maintain a track and trace policy, pre-booking sessions in the F&C Suite and the Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track is essential.
For the moment, it will not be possible to walk into the facilities and immediately access the F&C Suite or the Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track.
Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes prior to your booking start time.
If you arrive late for a booking for the F&C Suite or the Sir Mo Farah Athletics track, you may use the relevant facilities, but your session must end at the time detailed in your booking. Other members will be arriving to use these facilities so all bookings have to start and finish at the specified times.
Can I use the F&C Suite and Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track at any time?
Unfortunately not. For the F&C Suite, there are specific one hour sessions, followed by 30 minutes of cleaning throughout from 07:00 – 21:30 on weekdays and 08:30 – 17:00 at weekends. For specific time slots please check the online booking system.
The Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track will be available for members to use from 1st September, initially for running activity only with members being able to book specific one-hour (60 minute) sessions throughout the week via our new online booking system.
Are there any limits on capacity?
Yes, in order to maintain social distancing within the F&C Suite, we have applied the industry guidance on capacity limits.
The capacity of the F&C Suite is set at 18 in total at any one time:
- 8 people within the free weights/lifting area
- 10 people within the CV/resistance machine area
How do I book a session?
When will my membership be unfrozen and what happens if I pay by continuous card payment?
The F&C Suite will be reopening from 1st September and all annual or quarterly Community, Staff and Alumni memberships will be unfrozen from this date. As per previous correspondence, all memberships were frozen on the day we closed on the 20th March. The days lost on your membership will be added from the 1st September and the membership extended accordingly.
For members who pay on monthly Continuous Card Payment (CCP) basis, as no payments have been taken during the period of closure, no additional days will be added on to your membership. If you still have a valid CCP membership, the next payment will be taken on the 15th September. However you can book sessions in the F&C Suite and Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track from 1st September.
If your CCP membership was due to expire during the closure, this membership has now expired. If your membership has expired and should you wish to take reactivate it please email email@example.com
I’m not a currently a member, can I join?
I have a BUCSUniversal membership, can I access the F&C Suite?
My membership has expired during the closure, what should I do?
For annual or 3-month Community, Staff or Alumni memberships the days that we were closed until your membership expired, will automatically be added onto your membership from 1st September.
For all student memberships, we will automatically add the days lost from 28th September – unless you would like to access the facilities before this date.
Are there time restrictions?
Yes, we will limit time in the F&C Suite and Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track to one hour (60 minutes) per person, per session.
Can I use the F&C Suite and Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track multiple times during the week?
Yes, there are no restrictions on the number of sessions you can book but you will only be able to book sessions up to three days in advance. With capacities limited and lots people keen to start using the facilities again, we kindly ask members to be considerate of others when booking sessions.
Can I book back-to-back sessions ?
Yes, you can. However you will be required to vacate the F&C Suite at the end of your session, for 30 minutes to enable cleaning to take place.
What if I can’t attend a booked session?
Please cancel your booked session using the online system as soon as possible to allow someone else to use the facilities.

We will monitor the number of cancelled sessions to ensure all slots available are being utilised effectively, should a pattern emerge of late cancellations we will contact the member and may need to review bookings for that user.
What happens if I’m late for a session?
If you arrive late for a booking for the F&C Suite or the Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track, you may use the relevant facilities, but your session will end at the time detailed in your booking. You will not be given any additional time to use the relevant facilities.
Will members be able to clean the equipment?
Yes, this is really important. All members are asked to clean the equipment when they have finished using it, including high touch points such as seats, handles, monitors, weights and bars. We will provide cleaning materials and products to use.
Are there any changes to the equipment in F&C Suite?
We know our members like to use a range of equipment during their workout and so we have kept as much equipment in place as possible.
In order to maintain social distancing, we have decommissioned some machines, lifting platforms and spaced out equipment where possible. We have also removed communal equipment such as mats and gym balls as well as the stretching area within the F&C Suite.
We will ask all members to maintain social distancing within the F&C Suite and work a minimum of one machine apart.
Can I use equipment on the Sir Mo Farah Athletics Track?
Unfortunately, hurdles will not be available to use on the track. We will also be unable to loan starting blocks to but users are permitted to use their own personal starting blocks. They should be used by one athlete who needs to thoroughly clean them before and after use.
Can I use changing facilities?
All members should arrive changed and ready to use the facilities and then change and shower at home.
Members are not permitted to bring personal towels into the F&C Suite. Cleaning materials will be available to wipe down equipment before and after use.
Can I fill up my water bottle in the F&C Suite?
The water fountains in the F&C Suite and in the main reception area will be out of service until further notice so please ensure you bring a sufficient amount of water to keep you hydrated throughout your session. Vending machines are also available to purchase water from.
Do I have to wear a mask in the F&C Suite?
It is not compulsory to wear a face mask when you visit the gym, as there are a range of other measures already in place in the gym to support safety and hygiene. If you want to to wear a face mask that is absolutely fine but please ensure that all used masks are disposed of safely in one of the bins provided.
Are fitness classes still running?
We are aiming to restart the facilities in a phased fashion so that we can get everything that’s needed in place and to safely build delivery back up. Unfortunately, we are not yet able to operate fitness classes. We realise that these activities are popular with our members and we are working hard to find a way to operate these sessions in future, and will provide further updates in due course.
Can I park on campus or travel by bicycle?
Parking on the main campus is very limited and we encourage our users to arrive on foot or bike. Bike racks are available to use outside the main sports facilities. Anyone wishing to drive to the main campus will be responsible for following the on site parking guidance and restrictions.
