Combined Course - Level 4 Certificate in Nutrition for Physical Activity and Sport RSPH (QCF)

The Level 4 Nutrition for Physical Activity and Sport RSPH (QCF) course is designed for individuals who require an understanding of nutrition and diet, and their effect on health. It is particularly relevant for people working in the health, fitness, or catering professions who might have a role in the promotion of healthy eating or the preparation of meals, menus, and diets for sportspeople at all levels of ability.

Dates and times

This course compromises of two units.

Unit One - Level 4 Award in Nutrition

This is the starting point for the course and includes two full days on campus attending lectures and practical sessions in our nutrition kitchen.

The two days on-site are from 9am-5.30pm on and you can choose from date options that start in September 2024, November 2024, February 2025, and April 2025. The dates options include:

  • Saturday 28th September 2024 and Saturday 26th October 2024
  • Saturday 16th November 2024 and Saturday 14th December 2024
  • Saturday 1st February 2025 and Saturday 1st March 2025
  • Saturday 5th April 2025 and Saturday 17th May 2025.

When you have attended the two on campus sessions you are then able to continue your studies and progress to unit two. 

You will receive access to the online part of the unit one two weeks prior to the first on-site date so you can fully prepare. This course takes approximately 70 hours to complete and you will be required to work through the online classes independently between the first and second sessions on campus.

Unit Two  - Level 4 Certificate in Nutrition for Physical Activity and Sport

Following your attendance of the two on campus dates you will study unit two which is delivered online and comprises videos, slides, quizzes, and tasks for you to complete at your pace.

Content

Whilst enroled on this course you will study the fundamentals of sports nutrition and learn how these dietary considerations can help those participating in physical activity and sports, perform well, and recover from their endeavours.

You will cover a wide range of areas including:

  • physiological functions and dietary sources of macro and micronutrients
  • hydration, dietary requirements and food choices of individuals throughout life and guidelines for participants in different physical activities and sports
  • components of energy consumption and expenditure
  • energy, hydration and nutrient requirements at different lifetime stages
  • factors that affect nutrient requirements in relation to social, cultural, religious, and ethnic groups
  • effects of diet on health
  • relationship between diet and disease
  • possible dietary influences for different groups
  • legislation as it relates to labelling and advertising of food
  • food labelling requirements
  • legal requirements in relation to health claims and nutrition claims
  • the relationship between nutrition and physical activity
  • nutrition fundamentals for physical activity and sport
  • how to estimate energy requirements based on physical activity levels and other relevant factors
  • energy expenditure and nutrient use for different physical activities
  • how to advise clients on nutritional strategies (and menus) to improve performance
  • use of performance enhancing products and sports drinks in nutritional planning for participants in sports and physical activity.

Assessment

The course is assessed by the submission of a number of written assignments. 

Requirements

To enrol on this course you must be 18-years or over. It is recommended that learners should have achieved a level of education equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A*-C, however exemptions may be made for adult returners with relevant experience.

Award

Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be awarded a Level 4 Certificate in Nutrition for Physical Activity and Sport from The Royal Society for Public Health.
