SHOCC began life in 1971 focusing on projects in the so-called ‘Third World’ and since that time has raised over £350,000 for over 100 projects in 35 countries. It also provided advice and support for students who wanted to work overseas.
This year marks a major change for the charity. Not only has it added another ‘C’ to its name, thereby widening its remit to include work in the UK, it has also attained full charity status, a Board of Trustees and departmental representatives.
The aims of the new charity are to expand on its past successes, to widen its links with community projects both local and global and to provide support for students who wish to help others to help themselves. The success of the newly established SHOCC will depend on you - members of the St Mary’s University community - taking this work forward.
