SHOCC began life in 1971 focusing on projects in the Global South. Since then it has raised over £500,000 for over 100 projects in 35 countries. It has also provided advice and support for students who wanted to work overseas.

In 2008 it added another ‘C’ to its name thereby widening its remit to include work in the local community. At the same tine it obtained full charity status (number 1120787) and a Board of Trustees.

The aims of the charity are to continue the work started by a small group of university staff in 1971 to tackle disadvantage and to help others help themselves.
